Food for thought

Did feminism open up jobs and careers for women just to make a fun playground for women? To give women economic freedom and safety? If so, wouldn’t this in itself be valid? Why should women have to keep on being ‘in solidarity’, grateful forever?

Where is the pleasure in the new workplace? What is the fun and challenge? Where is the power? What is our goal?

Office Politics: To be ‘Male-identified’ or ‘Female-identified’?

Should women stand in solidarity with other women at work? Or is this just expecting what we expected of our mothers and daughters, that is, unquestioning support because we deserve it: ‘After all we suffered for you, you owe it to us …’

Women’s expectations of other women are different, now after twenty-five years of feminism and post-feminism. There is a subliminal notion that women should support each other. Women no longer think it’s normal or OK for women to act competitive, although they fear that women will still behave this way, and be disloyal. Thus they are wary, suspicious, on the lookout for ‘traitors’.

Of course, solidarity does not mean that there will not be competition. What happens, for example, when two qualified women (friends, even) both want the same job? This makes solidarity difficult. But there are rules of fair play. Men in political parties have long faced this dilemma: they fight and then reunite when one wins or defeats the other in an election.

But, beyond how women should show solidarity, the point is: Will it help women to be woman-identified? Or will it hurt women’s chances of getting ahead? To put it bluntly, should a woman play up to male groups at work and disassociate herself from other women there to get ahead?
